URINETOWN was produced on Broadway in September, 2001 by the Araca Group and Dodger Theatricals in association with TheaterDreams, Inc., and Lauren Mitchell.
In a dystopian future where a devastating drought has made private toilets illegal, citizens must pay to use public amenities controlled by the corrupt Urine Good Company (UGC). The story follows Bobby Strong, a rebellious assistant custodian who sparks a revolution against the oppressive pay-to-pee system after his father is sent to "Urinetown" for urinating in public. As Bobby falls in love with Hope Cladwell, daughter of the ruthless UGC CEO Caldwell B. Cladwell, he leads the poor in an uprising against the wealthy elite. Through dark humor, memorable songs, and sharp social commentary, this Tony Award-winning musical satirizes corporate greed, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, and even the genre of musical theater itself. The show cleverly tackles serious themes of sustainability, economic inequality, and political corruption while maintaining its irreverent wit and self-aware humor.
